When Does DragonBall/DBZ take place

Okay, the only clue that Akira Toriyama ever gave was on the first ever page where it says, "LONG LONG AGO IN A DEEP DARK FOREST FAR FROM CIVILAZATION." But what I don't get is how long ago is "LONG, LONG AGO"? And besides, it all seems so futuristic. For example, look at West City. Look at Capsule Corp. Look at the fact that they have discovered space travel. I mean, Dragonball started in 1985 (or something), but man went to the moon in 1969 (or something). Yet, 16 years (or something) isn't that long ago at all. And it must have started some time way after space travel was discoverd bacause Bulma didn't consider going to Jupiter a big deal at all. So, when does Dragonball take place?

Well, Dragonball is a place of its own. People from our time period thought that long ago, people knew space travel. I would place the time period in the B.C.s. Goku while on King Kai's planet mentioned Isaac Newton (in the anime so it can be non-canon) so I really don't know.

Perhaps someone else with the manga can find this, but I remember someone mentioning the only timeline in DB/Z history around the time of the Cyborgs. I've looked for it, but can't seem to find said quote.

I've read the entire manga and have never read anything that hinted when Dragonball takes place.

I think it's stated in the Daizenshuu that it takes place in 700 AD (give or take a few). (Alternate universe obviously, I don't know about you, but I don't remember learning of a time period in history class when flying cars and dinosaurs co-existed).

I think that the Dragon Ball series takes place in the distant future. In volume 7 of Dragon Ball, Bulma stated something about technology that gives you clue that the series does take place in the distant future.

Well neither does having a dog for a king. The Dragon world has little to no similarities to the world that we live in, other then sharing the name planet Earth. In our world I don’t recall any time in which humans, bears, dogs, cats, and dinosaurs lived together in peace, with technology letting people put their hover cars into a small pocket sized capsule. As it has been said earlier the Dragonball series took place during the 700’s time period, as proven by Trunks statement about when Cell came from, however I would say that the Dragonball 700’s age has absolutely no baring upon the 700’s or the eight century that we know of today.

I think long before the Dragon Ball series started, humanity were able to develop humanoid animals (e.g Oolong and King Koku) clone dinosaurs (e.g. Giran and Pteranodon Family)from highly advanced genetic engineering. Then, war broke out between the countries of civilization. Civilizations were totally annihilated each other, leaving nothing but relics behind, and just an little of the world's technology. Centuries later, humanity rediscover basic technology and start back over again. Over the centuries, new continents were form out of the separation of other continents (which explains why the DB looks like this. Just this website http://www.pojo.com/dragonball/Worldguide.shtml and humanity began to rediscover basic technology. More centuries later, Dr. Briefs invents Hoi-Poi Capsules. So I think the DB/Z takes place in the distant future.
