I own the first Tenkaichi game....and it's extremely poorly made. I could enjoy it for a while, true, and at first, like everyone else I was mezmorized by the amount of things you could do that you simply couldn't before. Unfortunately, once that wore off I realized the fighting system really was quite horrible. Physical attacking was an abomination. You need atleast two physical attack buttons for any fighting game, or it doesn't cut it. A lot of the beams looked exactly the same, just with different colour. There were, like...two physical specials...a speed one and a power one...both of which looked extremely similar. Story mode was far inferior to what we had in Budokai 3.
And above all....it was extremely, EXTREMELY unbalanced. SSJ4 Gogeta could kill hercule with one attack. Even if you boosted him, or someone else weak to the max, and gave someone with a SSJ4 Gogeta/Super Vegetto level of power nothing, the gap would still be enourmous. It's like they are there to lose. I mean, sure. I think, through customization, you should be able to make it that imbalanced if you want to, for some reason. But considering you absolutely cannot balance it, it's enourmously dissappointing. My question is...of the things I have mentioned, how much has been improved? I know the look of the attacks have, but all in all, how much better has it gotten, both overall and in each of these areas individually? It does seem to be quite a bit better, but I want to get specific.

The story modes a Map now! LOL Similar to that of B3 but theres only
one red dot per scenio and a bunch of yelow dots that contain many random things. For ex, a yellow dot on the map might mind a dragon ball is found, a Z item is there, you talk to non playable characts and walk around in the mini maps. Also in the story mode, it gets the WHOLE story, its not jumbled up like in B3 whereyou only get the character you controling points of view. This for one makes for a really really really loong game. I been playing this game Now for like 3-4 hours everyday and I'm still in the cooler saga!. Also they have more beter cut scenes now. LIke When Goku goes SS for the first time, you can see Kurrin's death and goku's transformation of how he becomes it (If you know what I mean.). Also in this game, you can go down to your base. This for one makes it a fun game. Also the games is more balanced like Piccolo can actully beat Oozaroo Gohan easly if hes customized a bit. |
I see. What in regards to the combat system though?
Original moves for one thing, you have 3 health bars instead of that one HUGE life bar, its easier to do combo moves with the Square and Triangle buttons, can do teleport attacks, transform in battle ( Your attacks change during transformations, so no sirit bomb with SS Goku :( :(. But the attacks arestronger thou). the Rush attacks are different. Like its not a blue screen in rush attacks, but an Real mele attack. You can INJURE #16 with just regular punches and kicks. Before #16 was invincible to punches and wont flinch. Now he doese. LOL. In Base Goku, you can use the kaioken attack without transforming into kaioken. Also 5 on 5 battles. In Tourney mode, you cant just win by constanly using rushes like in BT1, you realy have to FORCE the guy out of bounds. |

I'll gladly go disect the game.
The character trait system effects are not as evident as in the first one. Dragonball characters are almost incapable of maintaining flight; if you stop moving, you fall to the ground. Thats expected as Dragonball characters were incapable of flying really. That in mind, I bring attention to Burter and Guldo specifically. Guldo no longer does that stupid running motion where he is slow; he is decently fast. A punch against a Tien does 160 damage; Rock throw does 6000; Full Energy Blast (hitting at max 5 hits) does 6000. Both these two improve by 1350 more damage when you do your Special Fighting Pose 3. However, Guldo's special does only 9990. Not much of a damage increase. Burter...fastest character in Tenkaichi 1; fastest in Tenkaichi 2. I have yet to see if he is the weakest but with one square button press, he does two rapid punches for total of 100 damage. An all square combo does 700 damage with 12 hits. However, it is possible to do a 20 hit combo using the teleport juggling which is a recent addition that does 4010 damage. His normal attack, Full Power Energy Ball, is actually large balls of energy that are shot in a short amount of time that counts as two hits, but I have done three hits. The damage ranges from 9000 to 9600. The balls of energy don't actually go in a straight line either. When characters are at opposite ends of a stage, the Full Power Energy balls actually land on each side of the target instead of on it, effectively negating it as a range attack. A nice addition with Rush attacks is that they no longer cost energy UNLESS they land. Of course Burter has one which deals 7920 damage for 18 hits, the last strike dealing around 2000 damage itself. With Special Pose, Full Power Energy Ball jumps to 11620 with two hits (havent landed three hits) and High Speed Rush it increases to 10310. Now, which is not surprising, is Burters special; a rush attack. If you miss with a rush special, you do not lose your special: you simply try again. However, Burter does a 35 hit special with 12250 damage. Not a great deal more than a Max Full Power Energy Ball. Now, for something interesting: Strength based characters has evolved. Characters such as Legendary Super Saiyan Broly are no longer incredibly slow as before. His punches are slow in comparison, but his movement is not. To get on topic, Broly still has the un-chalant effect when being punched. Using Base Goku in costume 6 (this is special; its the one during the fight with Frieza with half torn blue undershirt and looking beat up) against a Legendary Super Saiyan Broly, my melee attacks do damage but do not draw an effect. A Kamehameha non-charged does 4320 damage for 6 hits. Fully Charged Kamehameha does 7940 damage with 7 hits. I also want to point out that Broly is atleast two times Goku's height in this game in Legendary Super Saiyan form. Now, pushing left on the D-pad and pushing down on the right thumbstick, I transform into Super Saiyan Goku. Now kicks in why I like Costume 6. In the show, Goku's original super saiyan transformation had a different hair compared to future times when he transforms: same goes with this game but only in Costume 6 and only in Super Saiyan form. On topic again, melee attacks do not any damage. However, Goku has a one handed Kamehameha, the one he does against Frieza at the end of their battle when Frieza desperately attacks Goku. Like most beams in the game, this can be charged. Non-charged Angry Kamehameha (as its called) does 4550 damage for 7 hits against Legendary Broly. When charged, Angry Kamehameha does 9030 damage. A decent increase. Now I revert to normal by pressing down on the D-pad and push down on the thumbstick. Then I go Super Saiyan by using the Up D-pad and thumbstick. I say this to illustrate that you can transform straight from Base Saiyan to any transformation and revert back and choose another. At Super Saiyan 2 Goku, electricty constantly surges and the hair becomes defined and changes colour to a normal Super Saiyan hair instead of what it looked like in Super Saiyan form. The change in colour is only in costume six I want to remind you. Again, melee attacks do no damage. Now Goku goes back to Kamehameha and does, at non-charged, 5540 damage for seven hits. Full charged Kamehameha does 10400 damage at 7 hits. Mind you, this is against Legendary Super Saiyan Broly so it is probably subject to change. I now go all the way to Super Saiyan Three. What I like is that the hair moves when you move; great detail to character depth at this point. It is not as evident in other forms, but in Super Saiyan 3 it is quite obvious. Now Goku has Super Kamehameha which does 6020 damage at 7 hits. A charged Super Kamehameha, which has a longer charge time than the other forms, does 11300 damage for 7 hits. It is also the biggest except in Super Saiyan 1 and 2 when it is used as a special. In Super Saiyan 3, Goku uses Dragon Fist. Since those are not on topic for this, I'm not going to go into detail with them. To get on topic, I press square near Broly and my reaction is....my punches effect Broly. Goku needs to be Super Saiyan 3 for his physical attacks to have an effect on Broly. This is the same against Base Janemba and Hildegarn/Hirudegarn. Anyways, I revert to normal and press L2 and O. Goku does the X formation with his body for a couple seconds and says "Share your energy with me" I look around the stage...and there it is, in the sky is a fairly small Spirit Bomb. I charge up to Max Power. I then press L2, Down and Triangle. Goku teleports to beneath the Spirit Bomb and tosses it down at his opponent. There is no video for this attack; it just hits and does damage. Since I only did one Share Energy, it is small but fast but easily avoidable. This time I do it twice. I got a larger and smaller Spirit Bomb that does over 20 thousand damage. Now I do it three times, to get a Max Spirit Bomb. This one is huge and slowest. Against, its easily avoidable. But, it does over 30 thousand damage. In Free Battle, you can choose to have 5v5 battles or un-even fights such as 2v5 or 1v5. However, to fuse, you require to be in a Tag or Free Battle. So to make Gogeta or Vegeto...you need Goku and Vegeta (second form). Vegeta has two forms in this. His Cell Saga one and his Buu saga one. Of course, then there is Majin Vegeta and Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta: both seperate characters, same with Super Saiyan 4 Goku. There is now a fair amount of Great Apes in this game. There is also the Bebi Vegeta one which is my favorite. What I like about Meta-Cooler is that he is treated as an Android and cannot power up. That I view as a cool addition. Now, my fingers are tired from typing so any more questions about the game, I'd be happy to answer. And please, make them specific and not broad questions. Edit: Forgot about the Combo System...damn; lol. I'll choose Meta-Cooler to illustrate this. In second costume, I have a reddish-pink Cooler. Anways, with Meta-Cooler, if I press square and then triangle, Meta-Cooler punches once and knees my opponent (Android 13 for this example). The knee effectively stuns Android 13. I press Triangle quickly after the knee lands, Meta-Cooler swipes across Android 13's chest for another stunning attack. I press Triangle again, Meta-Cooler, who's body has now turned slightly away from Android 13 because of the momentum of the swipe, he hops up and kicks with his right at Android 13's head for another stunning blow. I press square as Meta-Cooler lands. He then crosses his arms and swings with his metal tail. This attack ends the combo and knocks Android 13 far away. For Meta-Cooler, I can press square up to four times and then triangle and he will start the knee-stunning combo. If I press Square and then Up+Triangle, Meta-Cooler does a lift attack that every character does. This knocks Android 13 up and then down. But, if I press X while #13 is going up, Meta-Cooler rushes up to #13. I press square four times and Meta-Cooler attacks. I end with a triangle and Meta-Cooler knocks #13 down and far away. Square and then Down+Triangle does a leg sweep that knocks #13 limitedly in the air. Pressing Triangle, Triangle, Square Meta-Cooler does a Teleport Juggle Three times. Of course, I can always just hold square and Meta-Cooler does a charged punch that knocks #13. Quickly pressing Triangle, Meta-Cooler teleports infront of #13 and knocks him away. There are other combos and moves I have yet to do so yeah....fingers hurt!

I've discovered a special variation for when your character is in Max Power. You fly at your opponent using the L2+X dash (one with aura) and then you press triangle. This does a stunning blow of some sort. Then you keep tapping X; your character engages in a massive combo that is simliar to the ones when you have to characters to a charge attack at the same time and then they start a Dragon burst where they exchange blows except that this special variations, only one character does it. Then, once your special is almost done, you hold L2, press Triangle once and that knocks them away and press Triangle again: This does you L2+triangle attack as a finish to the combo. From what I've experience, it does over 20000 damage with Goku. Ummm...another thing, I put down in the other thread that I did not have the normal Great Ape; its a transformation of Kid Goku. Well, when you do Destined Rivals (its a what-if adventure) you get Great Ape at the end.

Good post HerrGeiger. Now, for some refinements, I think that brolly
starts to flinch when Goku is at SSJ2. Any transformation above super Sayan makes "giant" enemies feel the impact (for instance super vegeta, super trunks and SSJ2, 3 Majin Vegeta...) can bang broly around pretty bad. The combo system is still pretty much basic. Sure more developed than BT1 but still, it's really the most basic stuff. The AI can give you trouble espetially in the first hours of gameplay however, it's not unbeatable. The comand layout regarding the combo system is pretty much square for regular atacks (same string for all characters however with diferent anymations) and triangle for heavier attacks. You can also press and hold square to make an attack that makes the enemy fly across the map witch gives you the possibility to teleport behind him and crush him into the floor. The story mode is fun for while but it gets tiresome after a bit. The cutscenes lack expression both in grafics as in voice. If a non fan playsthis game he'll still be on the dark regarding DBZ story. Also, with costumization you can improve your characters a lot but you'll still get really strong opponents (ex: Gojeta SSJ4 and Great ape Bebi Vegeta) who get a huge advantage. However, that's in line with the IGT because you can tell the diference in power and speed (in some transformations) that transformations give. Also, the reintroduction of the password system is a plus as you'll be able to fight opponents from all over the world :) All in all, I give this game an 8.0 as the Combo system could be much better and the animations could also be improved. Cheers... |

Wow...the physical melee system sounds, umm....a lot better. Plenty of arcade games can cost through with a light and heavy attack button, yet only a general melee button was lame. Now....yeah, I'm definitely happy about that.

When I was typing all that out, I was testing it myself. However, what could be subject to change that is Z-items but I highly doubt that. What I believe they did is that the highest transformation (outside of fusion) is what causes impact, exception being Goten and Trunks turning Super Saiyan. But Vegeto, I suggest getting it if you have a Ps2 or plan on getting a Wii. Agreed, adventure can get fairly boring at times, but when you have it on max difficulty, its damn hard especially when starting out and your character is maybe level 12 or 14 against a level 225; its insane.

Yeah, at first it was hard fighting those high-level characters, but now I can kick their asses like there's no tomorrow.
BT2 got pretty easy after a while. They need to make a fighting system that takes a long time to learn and master. I mean, I beat the game in practically a weekend. So.........you know. And there's not that many clashes that can be done you know? In the whole time ive played the game I've only been through two clashes!!! Two clashes!!!!! Unbelievable. Look, I know you've guys have already said a lot of stuff so Im not going to mention much more. BUT, I do want to bring up one last thing: A LACK OF DESTRUCTION! Seriously, this is the thing that I hate the most about the game. Whenever you smash someone into the ground, there is a "BOOM", and a big dust cloud. [depending on the size of the character] Okay cool, but I still want to see the crater in the ground where I threw Freeza's body! Same thing goes for waves an such. I want to see terrain getting deteriorated by my Big Bang Attack. Or the city blowing up due to all the kamikaze ghosts I just sent in. You guys know what Im sayin'? I would really like to see some actual destruction. And example would be like.....oh......I dont know....like SSj3 Goku kicking Broly through an island or something. They also need to expand the square footage to the levels. I mean you got to admit that when your kickin ass, the barriers and boundries kinda kill the mood. [at least I think it does] IMO, it'd be cool if they made the levels like four or five times bigger. That way you wouldnt really run into those barriers n stuff and it would make the fights more exciting. Another thing is the clashes. We should be able to clash anything [almost] and everything. But we cant....so what the heck, right?

The level thing could be delt with by using circular cenarious. like in Super DBZ king kais world or something. the level would appear neverending creating an illusion of greatness... of course, it would be freaky to bang an enemy away just to se him hit our backs :)
Cheers... |
