Yamcha had to fight tien, Chiaotzu fought Krillin. Big difference.

Exactly right. They had a fued to resolve between Chaotzu and Krillin, but Yamcha was considered a throw a way character. However, as it happens, I remember that the Chaotzu-Krillin fight was not in the semi-finals, but instead in the quarter finals. I concede to this point.

And yeah, Yamcha was the only one to die against the Saibamen. Toriyama was saving Chaotzu for a more important role in the battle.

What role? He simply scratched Nappa's armor a little bit. Yamcha actually killed an enemy, Plus in early Dragon Ball he was extremely useful.

He also slashed Vegeta after that, too. Yamcha would never even get anywhere near Vegeta to do such an attack.

Yamcha's greatest moment in my opinion, was when Garlic Jr posessed him with that black water mist. He actually looked like he was equal to Piccolo, who was superior to Freeza's second form.
