It wasn't an act of defense when he transformed, it was more for precautionary reasons...getting the job done: Killing Cell. See, once Trunks stepped in, he was sure his dad had made his mind in allowing Cell to take 18. And he was only in SSjin form when he dared to block Cells path.

Exactly, so if he was only a SSJ to block Cell's path as Vegeta did, then its clear he wasn't strong enough to actually beat him (powered up or not). Trunks and Vegeta transformed because they knew thats what it would take to stop Cell.

Not nesscarily, although he can beat him if Cell gets lucky he'll have doomed a 2nd world. If he was that much weaker he would have just gone right to SSJ 2nd Grade, he wanted to End the fight with Cell quickly and the fight in Normal SSJ Form would have taken awhile.
