You obviously misunderstood the statement. Goku didn't say "I think," he said it as a statement.

Goku: He's strong. Even stronger than Majin Buu.
Trunks: I think you're giving him too much credit.

Remember that Trunks didn't fight Kid Buu, so how would he know if Goku was giving Rildo too much credit? Goku has experience fighting Kid Buu, so I'm guessing he would know more than Trunks. Rildo would win.

The original version says he's as strong as Majin Buu.

Dragon Ball characters are fictionnal, therefore if Trunks states something, it's the writer who states it, Trunks can't think for himself since he's not real. Trunks perfectly sensed Chibi Buu's strength when Goku was facing him. If Trunks say Goku gives Rildo too much credit and it isn't contradicted later than the writers meant Goku was giving him too much credit. Trunks can't think, if it was stated, it was stated by the writers, no one else.
