SSJ4 was just introduced too randomly for my liking... the same goes, to some etent, for SSJ3. There was absaloutly nothing to indicate there was a third or fourth level, and I can't really remember Goku dropping any hints that he had it until he fought Majin Buu and then-BAM! There's a third super saiyan form.

Vegeta reaching SSJ4 before SSJ3 was always ridiculous.
I mean are we meant to assume he had secretly achieved SSJ3 or did he achieved it transparently in the middle of being turned into a SSJ4 the first time by Bulma.

I aways just assumed that his becoming a super saiyan 4 was a one-time only deal. As in, he could do it again, if he got that machine, but without it, SSJ2 is his max.
Can't remember the end episodes of GT that wel though so...

Ok, after his initial transformation to SSJ4, what did Goku do to transform? Like the first time, he turned into an ape and then downsized, did he for the second time, just powerup and then a flash and then he is SSJ4?

I think so yeah it was instant. I don't think he went through the process. Like SSJ, SSJ3, SSJ4.
