The Japanese version was rather reliant on silence as a backdrop and using sparse tracks (but then common here and there) as a bold way to convey the tone (making one feel a warring notion through sheer music and the range of emotion conveyed). I felt this was a good approach, but somewhat unfulfilling considering how redundant said music became (but not vapid by full intents and means). The FUNimation dub relied on beefing up the footage through electronic music that changed whenever the scene changed, to convey a change in tone, which became a bit unnecessary (though I felt the music had a good tone for each episode). The OCEAN dub has a much more quiet score, but it was a bit lacking in variety to me. That aside, as for the thread's subject of discussion... I started watching it back when the OCEAN dub first aired in September of 1996, so I was 7 at the timeframe.

First episode I saw was I'd say around 1997 or 98 when it became super popular. So I was about 10 years old but I despised the show, I watched a part of it because I was flipping through the channels.
I started becoming a small fan of it when I stayed home sick one day and saw the a rerun episode of when Trunks comes from the future and tells Goku about the androids and his heritage, I always thought DBZ was just a hard core fighting show, but after watching that episode I realized it was also quite funny, and I thought it was interesting how Trunks came from the future so I slowly started getting hooked on it. I also started watching DBGT around that time, I say I was about 15. Then about two years ago I became a very big fan of the show, I was able to watch a lot of the episodes I never saw and read a lot of the manga, did a lot of the research and started becoming a member on a lot of forums. I was 17 I'm 19 now, and I'm still obsessed with the anime. I've realized that Dragonball is my favorite out of the three, and I'm currently making a huge fansite of the series that hopefully will be open one day. Most people like the anime because of the fighting, but I like it more for other reasons. I like it because of how much time passes from beginning to end. People actually grow up, the main characters actually have kids, and the kids grow up. Not many animes do that. Most animes has a teenager as the main character. But in this one we start off as a little kid, to a man in his 50's.

Funny enough, I watched a few episodes without knowing when I was 7 with my cousins.
And then one day, an uni student my mum worked with at her workplace paid my family a visit and I was drawing pokemon at that time-embarrassingly and he introduced me to Dragonball. He said how magical the show is and I had Toonami on then and Toonami showed a Dragonball teaser just then and we both went "wow" and I started to watch it from then on! so..let me see..that's like...when I was...13 or 14. So roughly 4 years ago? o__O? |
