Other possible explanation is Goku went seek for Dende since Piccolo would be out of Earth due their trip at Namek.

Which is weird since Goku could just used Shunkan Idô to go in there.

I don't think so. Piccolo is not one to play around in dire situations. In the long-run, Piccolo beat the guards, but came out of it battle-damaged. Besides that, the point remains, he cannot stand up to a Meta-Cooler...
