Broly wasnt very successful, he lost on two seperate occasions.
Failure does not equal success.
Sure, he was popular, but not successful.

And as for Goku; plothole.
Goku wasn't physically there, the DB couldn't have made that wish.
Why they scattered? Don't know.
Goku's spirit was on the battlefield to add more confidence to Gohan and Goten's ability.
He's done it before, why can't he do it again?

Goku had to be there. I admit; it seems very unlikely, because of all of the other things that you explained. But; we actually see Goku charge-up the beam, and Broly even notices him, and say's "Kakarot." Goten said that Goku was the dragon, and he even notices him when he arrives next to him. Goku had to be there.

Well, a bit earlier, wasn't Goten trying to call the dragon? I think he was trying to summon him to stop Broly, or something. Anyways; when Gohan and Goten get into their beam battle with Broly, and see how they're both not doing shit; Goten says "Shenron, please help us", or something of that sort. I'm not suggesting Shenron is a mind reader; but, what happens next is odd.

Now; a couple seconds later, it get's dark; then we hear Goku talkin. Gohan and Goten immediately notice it's him. Once he lands next to them, both of them get happy, and Goten says "Shenron is my dad." Broly notices Goku right after he goes SSJ, which tell's me he was there. You can also see his beam. Even towards the end; Goku yell's "Now", and you can look at the beam, and see him unleash a burst of power as well. It's kinda odd, but that's just how it was. I can't see Goku not being there.
