I can't tell which character is the best but I can tell about my favorites:

Goku and his smile

(I don't care if he's stupid or not!)

I can't help it but I think Piccolo is a most wonderful character (he looks often so serious, I just love it)

The future Trunks is kind of cute...

Yamcha and his long hair...yay! Wonderful!!

Vegeta is my over-all favorite character in DBZ because of his pride and fighting genuis. If I had to pick anyone after him it would definately be Gohan because he comes a long way with his fighting skills. After that I'd have to go with Bardock, because he was just in general a person with an awesome attitude. Oh and btw, universe, there is no way possible yamcha could compete with Master Roshi in the perverted area, it's just not possible, not at all. Goku may the stupidest person as far as his IQ goes, but you can never stay mad at the guy, it's just not possible because of his outgoing personality. His fighting IQ ranks up there on the food chain, around Vegeta and Piccolo.
