The third eye comes from Hinduism, and the Chinese believed in a demon race of people with three eyes that lived in the Himilayas, which of course corresponds to the people that live on the otherside of the Himilayas, the Indians.

If you knew anything about Sanjiyans that have three eyes, look almost exactly like humans. And are immortal, in since they cannot die from aging.

Watch 3x3 eyes before you talk any bit more on this subject.

Leda-Chan basically had it right, it's based on some Asian religions idea of a 3rd eye coming from "Meditation" and "Enlightenment" so there really isn't much else it can be since it's not really clarified what he is in the Manga anyway, and the Manga's original story is derived from an old Chinese Tale...hmm...

and so are sanjiyans.
