I now think the whole soul disappearances are a result of Kurotsuchi and Urahara's Gigai experiments, as Urahara's comment on the last panel, about him "Not thinking it'd come to this" has me wondering if he had some hand in this happening, and as such makes me wonder if it was a Gigai experiment gone bad that somehow escaped.

Well, considering that Urahara's whole Gigai testing as of late, which he says was a "result" of the whole soul disappearances, involves reconstituting those souls in the form of a Gigai, it's possible that he did recognize who attacked him.

I'm thinking it's framing though. I mean, how obvious would that be? Kubo doesn't like keeping the obvious up. So it's either Kurotsuchi but for good reason, or it's someone no one would expect with another good reason.
