I strongly agree with the idea of multiple characters.
One character can become stale after a while and cause a person to be inactive for long periods of time due to writer's block. At the very least, two provides some differentiation to allow a person to expand the story they're working with and take multiple routes. If you don't want more than one character, fine- don't make one.
There will be no "gang-fighting"- you can't just jump a member who has one character and stomp him to death without his consent. Battles are ALWAYS a matter of choice, and as in my case, I willingly subjected myself to fighting one-against-two against two other members' characters.
I see no problem with the idea. It's just a little more work keeping up with the new characters and making sure everythings spic-n'-span.
