Yes, Shodai was as strong as or stronger than most current shinobi- but there are now those who are as strong as or stronger than him, as opposed to back then, when he was the strongest by leaps and bounds. Sarutobi and Hanzou are perfect examples of this.

Shodai just trounced Madara AND the Kyuubi. Unless something is up, Shodai must be stronger than the Yondaime Hokage, Hanzou, and Akatsuki put together.
Forgive me if I'm a little hesitant to accept that notion as "fact". D;

Idealogically. He is idealogically a shell of his former self, at least in the sense Itachi was speaking, which by the way, was also his "crazy" facade.
It's been like 80 years; I doubt Madara has done anything but get stronger since then.
