Re: MFG Chronicles v.2
Adamene did not exactly drag his feet, but he was not particularly fast in heading towards his destination either. Witches were dangerous - old, disgruntled witches who had suffered over forty years of contempt and suspicion from their fellow villagers were far worse.
As he walked, it abruptly came to him that he had not yet examined the book that mysterious woman had left him. Grabbing it from his backpack with a single hand, he flung it open and set it in front of his eyes. He nearly stumbled into a post doing thus, so he proceeded more carefully, often casting glances at the path ahead as he kept reading.
It was written in a language incomprehensible to him, illustrated with all sorts of obscure - sometimes bizarre, sometimes plain-out creepy - imagery that seemed to make no sense. However, that mattered little, as Adamene soon realized. He came to a halt with a gasp just as the black words glowed a bright golden. Nervously he looked around - noone was in sight, which was just as well, since the letters... flew off the pages, and formed an intense golden aura around him. He felt a sudden drilling sensation in his head, but before he managed to become frightened, it was all gone.
Blinking to clear the black flecks that rushed across his eyes, as the daylight seemed rather dull compared to the light a few seconds ago, he looked at the book. The words were gone - the tome he was holding was completely empty. He expected... something to happen, but nothing really did. He felt himself. Nothing was different.
"Eh..." He murmured. "What was that all about?" He shook his head, and, focusing his mind on his purpose, continued towards the old hag's house.
To say that he felt unwelcome as he crossed the paved path that led from the garden gate to the front door would be an understatement. The stones were ragged and blackened, the trees old and haggard, the flowers dead and rotten. The whole garden seemed like it had not been catered for for ten years. Hesitantly, Adamene knocked at the door but even as he did the wooden construct creaked open with a cringing noise, admitting him in.
The feel of sulphur and rust was almost tangible the air, which smelled almost rotten. "Hello?" He called, and only the echo of his own voice replied to him.
Walking across the uncomfortably narrow corridor - especially uncomfortable considering the spider webs that hung from the ceiling, and the eerie candles that illuminated the space; abruptly Adamene realized the door had snapped shut behind him without a sound, barring all light from outside. Suddenly he stumbled onto something. Squinting his eyes to see in the half-light, he yelped and stumbled backwards as he realized his foot had just kicked against what looked like a human skull.
