I would agree with you but what does Shikamaru offer that is capable of stopping Kakashi from ripping his head off?

Kakashi would outlast him on chakra alone if they got into a power struggle. The only way to counter a Sharingan is with another eye technique, from what I've seen. Traps are all Shikamaru would really have because he has no impressive ninjutsu that I've seen. That's just my final thought on it though, anything is possible but this is just highly unlikely.
