Shikamaru says he always stays like, 4 steps ahead of his opponent. This becomes more difficult to do if your opponent pulls something unexpected out of the bag, obviously. But if Shikamaru knows exactly what his opponent is capable of, and has preparation time, there's essentially no stopping him. He'd devise a brilliant plan and Kakashi would be helpless, pretty much.
