Movie 8 Gohan was clearly the weakest Z-Fighter. In Movie 9, he's far above both Vegeta and Trunks. And that has nothing to do with Super Saiyan 2. He doesn't do that until the last few minutes of the movie.

So he obviously increased his power a great deal somehow.
