First Point
-Yes the Supreme Kai may have been surprised by his power as we all know ones Base and ones maximum power there quite a distance between the two. Super Saiyan 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>> Base.
-Plus Son Gohan would have received a Zenkai since his power was nothing to Majin Buu, and he got pretty knocked about. He was presumed dead by Piccolo, and Son Goku. Presumed dead, near death experience.
-Once again this comes into play. The Supreme Ki
cannot sense power levels very well. He underestimated loads of people in the Buu Arc.
Second Point
-Dude it was stated to be heavy by Son Goku.
-On that note Son Goku used weights to improve his power level greatly (Namek Arc).
-BRAIN-WAVE!! Look if the Z Sword was driven into rock, if the rock is destroyed then it will loosen its grip on the Zed Sword. Thus all Son Gohan needed to do was place his feet firmly in the ground which he did, and pull upward.
