I actually found the hannibal books to be quite boring. The movies were much better.
I'm a serious Hannibal Lecter fan, but I have to say that I agree with you. Hopkins seemed to know the character better than the series' author Thomas Harris did.

Unlike most serious fans, I hated the book ending of Hannibal, Lecter allowing Clarice to run with him seemed very out-of-character to me, especially after her substantial change in character from SOTL to Hannibal. Also I have to say that Hannibal Rising was terrible for a Hannibal Lecter "chapter", both movie and book. Hannibal Rising contradicted so many things about his childhood that were stated in the book Hannibal.

Also how he escapes from prison in the book Silence of the Lambs wasn't nearly as spectacular as the movie.

The best book I've ever read is My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

It's about a teenage girl who sues her parents because she was concieved to be a genetic match to her older sister who was diagnosed with leukymia. It made me cry at the end.
