Its logical dude. Think about it Kid Buu knows when his getting knocked about he isn't a complete idiot, he has some kind of recollection of his actions and thoughts.
-He fell asleep in-front of Son Goku to show, he was bored, not impressed by his power.
-He teleported to numerous planets sensing high powers levels in order to sense Son Goku and Vegeta. Using the Instant transaction technique.
-He tried to stop the Spirit Bomb as it was hurled against him, as knew it was a strong force to be reckoned with.

Kid Buu isn't as stupid as you think. He may not have gone into degrees in thinking about the battles he was having, or analyzing everyones battle strength, but he does know when his beat, and I sure he knows what his doing. When Son Goku executed a Kamehameha wave at him, Kid Buu did the same. If Kid realizes that all his attacks aren't doing anything to him, he tries to absorb. Super Buu's original form wasn't that smarter than Kid Buu yet he still exploded to give his body a wide radius to absorb.

Okay let me explain better. Buu of wrath is apart of the original Majin Buu: Kid Buu. So is Fat Buu. They have a memory, if not of anything else of what they were Kid Buu. Buu of wrath seemed to want to form that image of its former self once more. Is that really so hard to understand? He wanted to be Kid Buu again, not to gain power if you believe he was already stronger than him, or gain better techniques but to reform the original form. He was per say the evil part yang and Fat Buu was originally the good yin, and nothing is entirely yang or entirely yin: Kid Buu.
