Tsukuyomi is stated to be a dimension by Kakashi, stated to be another world by Itachi, and is ultimately a Genjutsu.
We know very little about it, but it could be that it goes deeper than simple Genjutsu. In fact, that might explain why it's impossible to resist.
As far as inorganic/brainless opponents are concerned, there's always Amaterasu. ;D And as I said, Mangekyou Sharingan seems to have the ability to manipulate the real world as well.
