The setting that Island described will only affect posts that you make in the future.

For existing subscriptions, go to User CP, click on List Subscriptions, and from there you can manage your subscriptions, including what type of notification you receive, if any.

Keep in mind that it's possible to be subscribed to a thread and not receive email notifications. In that mode, when you go to the top-level page in the User CP, you will see a list of new posts in all threads to which you are subscribed.
