Default Re: Buu Arc was much more childish

Perhaps it was just that Toriyama-sensei was trying to harken to the earlier days of Dragonball (where the series took itself as a comedy, before Piccolo Daimao's reign and the 23rd Budokai), but overall I concur in that with the Boo Saga, we had mischaracterizations and unimposing villains, no matter the undertone. "Fusion", Goten being a carbon-copy of Goku, and another Trunks sort of also insinuated that Toriyama-sensei was reasonably running out of ideas at this point, as he conceded it was in intention for him to end the series way back when. Extending it so far is eventually going to become stultifying. I wouldn't further that notion. As for the being a kid's show, while it was aimed for preteens, the amount of violence and innuendos openly displayed hardly qualify for a "kid's show". Gero / #20 chokes a bystander until his head snaps off and is dripping with a curtain of blood (something not even shown in the anime), we see Freeza hanging as a wafting stump, what with intenstines and other visceral things shown rather openly, and there is nudity in both the beginning of Dragonball and Z.... amongst other things. But I suppose folks of that age are numb to it now adays anyway.

If you're looking for more of the story elements and their roots, then look no further than the earlier Dragonball days, even if it took itself as said comedy. The series isn't particularly deep, but does have emotion and depth, even if not stupefyingly complex. It can be enjoyed for more than who has the biggest muscles.
