^I agree with Broly completely.
What happened was that as Dragonball became more action-oriented, it lost its original story elements, which became very clear by the time of "Dragonball Z." The series started trading magic and comedy for science fiction and action. But since Dragonball was so popular, Toriyama kept making new stories up until the Buu Arc. In a sense, he was like a fish out of water. This isn't to say that the later arcs were pieces of crap though-- given the situation of Toriyama, I'm very impressed by the results. (my inner Dragonball fan-boy is gushing up to the surface again .___.)
