What you've got to realize is that Akira Toriyama is really more of a comedy writer. He wrote Dr. Slump before Dragonball, and other works of his have been more comedy oriented: Nekomajin Z, his "crappy manga theatre" tankoubon one shot collections, etc. His favourite fight scene in the entire series is the one where Super Buu fights Piccolo and Gotenks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

I really just think he prefers to write less serious stuff.
