Q: Is there a way to change the icon that appears to the left of a thread's title on the thread summary pages (the one that looks like a piece of paper by default)?

A: Yes -- when you first create a thread, right under the edit box is a list of "Post Icons". If you select an icon from that list, it will appear in on the thread summary pages -- as I've done by choosing the smily face icon for this thread.
