Well I don't know, I consider Goku still trying to get to use to Super Saiyan alot better than him just suddenly mastering it. Considering how long it takes for someone to become a super saiyan, aka 1000 years.

Ye but how did he suddenly go super saiyan at will when he jus arrived on earth 2 talk 2 trunks. Movie 5 was after that (so it doesn't fit)

Ahh yeah I know, but if you think about it, what if Goku had been constantly training SSJ at the time prior to Trunks killed Frieza. And then a year went by, and Goku had neglected his training as an SSJ to increase his base power. Which would explain why he could go so well with Cooler's base form which is far stronger than Frieza's.
I mean if you start to forget to practice something you begin to forget using it, like Trunks could have easily had gone Super Saiyan and crush all those worms in GT, when he, Goku, and Pan got stuck inside that asteroid.
But then again I think Goku should have been dead and Bardock shows up instead, but gains super saiyan after the confrontation with Cooler.
