Ace and Luffy are not direct brothers, more like cousins that share the bloodline and are part of the First D. Last clan (First and Last are reference to names) explaining how they don't look alike and have different last names. D = Dreamers or Demons, depends on what side you wanna look at.

Most likely Ace arrived with Shanks crew, and lived on the island with Luffy. Most likely he was the one who initiated Luffy into the Dreamers Clan during Luffy's training following the 10 years after Shanks departure. Blackbeard may have been part of Whitebeard's crew already, and Ace joined him as a "Whitebeard" Pirate, as they went to the Grand Line. Blackbeard's real name is Marshal D. Teach by the way. Since then Ace proved his loyalties to Whitebeard and quickly became his 1st Lieutenant, which lead Blackbeard to jealousy, causing Blackbeard to do whatever evil acts his performed which caused Ace to follow him. Most likely Ace ate the fruit as a gift of promotion from Whitebeard or something else... (He's a pirate, even if he's a nice guy!)

Least thats as much as I can assume and speculate. I mean... Ace and Luffy don't look alike, and only act alike in terms of how much they eat, the way they sleep, and their ambitions. Outside of that it would be impossible to tell that they were brothers at all.

Also this is just me again. Shanks and Makino = Luffy (Makino is the bartender). They weren't married, Shanks was a 20 yearold pirate, she was a young woman, Luffy shares Shank's dreams and looks, as well as a small frame, supportive that both his parents weren't large people. Though Luffy's mom hasn't been revealed I can't think of anyone else to fit the role, especially since he's at her bar all the time.
