It's not a bad example at all. Plot's can be just as good, or better back then than things people come up with now. So it's not an issue. I think that some of the old SNES and NES games have better plots than some of the ones today. With manga it's the same way.
Also, for sound, just because it's higher output quality doesn't make it higher listening quality. There are plenty of old school games who's soundtracks blow some of the newer ones out of the water.
In general, there are older games that could come out over newer ones overall. Where older games won't have the smooth, 3D graphics of the newer ones, there are plenty of cases where the soundtrack and plot of the game completely trump that of a new game. Same principle with manga. And yes, art has generally improved in manga, as well.
